INTRODUCTION

Rudraksh is formed by association of two words, 'RUDRA' and 'AKSHA'. Rudra is the name of Lord Shiva. Aksha means 'tear'. It is said that the plant of Rudraksh is originated from the tear drops of Lord Shiva. As per the vedic scriptures Rudraksh can nullify the effects of malefic planets to a great extent. Shastras say Rudraksh of any mukhis can never do any harm to the wearer unlike Navratnas, which have to be carefully chosen. No other necklace or bead is so auspicious and powerful as Rudraksh.
Rudraksh come in different mukhis or the clefts or furrows on the surface. Shastras speak of 1 to 38 mukhis but normally 1 to 14 mukhis are used for astrological benefits. Each bead has a different effect on you, depending on the number of mukhis it has.
The botanical name of the Rudraksh plant is 'ELAEOCARPUS GRANITRUS'. This is found in the various parts of the world. It is said that the seed of Rudraksh contains the secrets of entire evolution of the cosmos within it. Ancient vedic scriptures like Shiva Purana, PadmaPurana (Chap 57) Srimad Bagwata (Chap III to VII ) Rudraksh Jabbalaoapanishad, Mantra Maharnava, etc. mentioned about the greatness and wonderful properties of Rudraksh beads.
It is believed that one who wear Rudraksh on their bodies, cannot be affected by sins. Even if, one wears Rudraksh on his body, without doing worship and saying the sacred mantra, does no get near any sinful deed or thought.
Before wearing the Rudraksh it is better to cleanse and purify it with milk, ghee, oil etc. and do pran prathista (give life to the Rudraksh) when the mantras corresponding to the mukhis are chanted, the Rudraksh gets activated.

PURITY, PRECAUTIONS & IDENTIFICATION__
....Rudraksha can be worn at all times . Some books say that Rudraksha could be taken off during s*x , menstrual cycles , during visit to funeral grounds and during Bowel movements . Also it is advisable to take off beads while taking bath as excess soap dehydrates the beads of the natural Oil . They need to be worn with faith , respect and love .
Life of Rudraksh could be any number of years. If well protected, can be passed on from generation To generation.______
How to Identify the real Rudraksh_______1 Tests like the one which sinks in water is original and the one that floats is a duplicate one , are not right. Even the ones made of wood with some lead impregnated in it can sink comfortably in water. The best way is to procure from reliable source.
If you place a real rudraksh bead in a full glass of water, it would drown in water. BUT that doesn't prove that it is real... even the Fakes drown in water because of metal particles.
2 Boil the rudraksh in water for continous 6 hours, if it is real rudraksh there would not be any effect on the rudraksh bead, else if it is artificial or two rudrakshs are joined together artificially(in case of Gauri shanker bead), they will get seprated.
3 Rudraksh should not be confused with the shape and size. One should carefully examine that Rudraksh bead have well defined, corns and contours are natural, there are no cracks near the central hole and the bead has a good health . Smaller size is also considered to be very auspicious.
4. Rudraksh Bead shall not be broken from any end.
Rudraksh is of special importance in religious ceremonies and prayers of God - Goddesses. It is difficult to get one faced and 9 to 14 faced Rudraksh. One faced rudraksh is very rare and is very powerful. The five faced Rudraksh Chain (mala) is therefore considered ideal for pooja purposes. A chain of 26 beads of rudraksh is placed on head, a chain of 50 beads is placed over the heart, while a 16 beaded chain is kept on the forehead.

ENERGISING/PUJA____________
The Rudraksha are immersed in oil overnight . Then they are washed with Panchamrit , while chanting Shiva Mantra, Om Namah Shivaye and then the Rudraksha are washed with pure water chanting the Sadyojaat Mantra which is as follows.
Om Sadyojaatam Prapadyaami Sadyojataajava Namah.
Bhave Bhavenaati Bhave Bhavasvamaam Bhavodbhavay Namah.
After this sandalwood paste, Ashatgandha(mixture of eight fragrances)and kesar(saffron) is rubbed on the beads chanting the following Vaamdev Mantra.
Om Vamdevaya Namo Jyeshthaay Namah Shreshthay
Namo Rudraay Namah Kaalay Namah Kala
Vikarannaay Namo Bal Vikaranaay Namo Balaay
Namo Bala Pramathanaay Namo Sarva Bhoot
Damanaay Namo Manomanaay Namah.
Next the following Aghor Mantra is chanted while offering incense.
Om Ag bhyo G bhyo Ghor Ghor Tarebhaya
Sarvebhya Sarva Sharvvebhyo Namaste Astu Rudra Roopebhyah.
After this the Rudraksha are smeared with saffron chanting the following Tatpurush Mantra.
Om Tatpurushaay Vidmahe Mahadevaay Dheemahi
Tanno Rudrah Prachodayaat.
Next the following Eeshaan Mantra is chanted on each bead.
Om Eeshaanah Sarvavidyaanam Eeshwar
Sarvabhootaanaam Brahmaadipati Brahmanaadhipati Brahma Shivome Astu Sadaa Shivom.
Then the Specified mantra for each Mukhi Rudraksha is chanted on that bead .
